Setting up the experiment

I’ve always been curious about hashtags on Instagram. There is so much speculation and so many things that have been written about which ones to use and the best practices when using them. I decided to run my own experiment and hopefully learn more about the impact of hashtags on Instagram. Keep reading for those all-important results.

On Instagram, I tend to use 25 hashtags which are mixed in with hashtags from posts with 1 million posts to 1000 posts. As running an experiment on the block of mixed hashtags isn’t really a viable option as I wouldn’t get valid data. I decided to run the experiment more logically and look specifically at a block of hashtags from posts from 1 million posts, 10,000 posts, 1000 posts and 100 posts.

Each day had their own 25 hashtags to look at, the results for this experiment were really interesting and I gained a lot of intel from it. As you can see below in the picture you will see which hashtags from posts I used.

A few things to keep in mind when running this experiment in order for it to be a fair race, I decided to post at 13:00 every day.

The all-important results

Monday

As you know from the picture above I used only 25 hashtags from 1 million posts. I have always heard in passing that you should never use many hashtags from 1 million posts. But the results were slightly unsurprising.

For each post that went out, I didn’t notice a huge rise in likes for each they stayed very close to each other. If you delve deeper into the analytics and look more specifically at the impressions from hashtags then you will notice quite the difference. The Monday post only got 6 impressions from hashtags which were very useful to see.

Tuesday

In this post, I used only 25 hashtags from 10,000 posts. The Tuesday post performed best in regards to the impressions from hashtags. I did get the most likes out of all the posts but by only a small amount.

Wednesday

In this post, I used only 25 hashtags from 1000 posts. This one performed rather well actually and came in second place for impressions from hashtags. I wasn’t actually quite sure what kind of results I would get for this one, but some interesting data came from it.

Thursday

In this post, I used only 25 hashtags from 100 posts. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting the results that I got from this one. For some reason my feeling was that this one was going to perform best, as there are fewer posts on them and I thought maybe there was a higher chance of our post showing up in peoples feeds.

Friday

In this post, I used only 25 hashtags from 1 million posts. I managed to run this number again and got very similar results to the one on Monday which wasn’t too surprising.

Key Takeaways

Now I have run the experiment and you have seen the results for yourselves I think there is a lot to learn from this experiment. More importantly that using hashtags from 1 million posts isn’t strongly advised.

What I do understand better is that you could use a mixture of hashtags from each of these number categories. You could use 2 hashtags from 1 million posts, 10 hashtags from 10,000 posts, 10 hashtags from 1000 posts and 3 hashtags from 100 posts.

As the results specifically showed a lower impression from hashtags for both the 1 million posts and 100 posts.

As with any advice given by most blog posts regarding hashtags, make sure you use hashtags that are related to the subject of the post.

Running this experiment was really interesting for me as I’m trying to learn the importance of social media analytics. In the new year, I will be performing more experiments on Instagram and hopefully a few more channels too. Follow me on my Twitter, to be told when and what experiments I may run.

When I was doing some reading on a Monday and looking to find my #GoodReadMonday for my Twitter channel. I came across an article by Later.com where they had explored the topic of managing appointments directly through Facebook or Instagram.

This made me want to explore this topic in further detail and also provide you with some valuable use cases. This might be the perfect feature if you are a service-based business and just don’t have the money to spend each month on a booking management software.

If you use this option you save on having to guide your clients to download a brand new app just so they can book appointments with you, which can be one of the biggest issues when it comes to getting your clients to book a service with you. 95% of Facebook visits are made on smartphones and tablets, making booking your services on the go even more important.

Keep reading if you want to know how to get set up.

How to get set up on this service - Facebook

In order for you to get started, you will first need a Facebook page. If you haven’t set one of those up then I suggest doing so as it only takes a few minutes.

Once you have a page then click on the blue button that says “Add a Button”. Here you will be given a few options on what kind of call to action button you can apply.

Click on “Make a booking with you”.  Then choose “Book Now”.

You will then be given the option to either choose Appointments on Facebook or Link to website. Now select Appointments on Facebook.

Facebook then provides you with a little more clarification on what exactly this feature can offer you. Make sure to check this over so that it can align with your business goals. If you are happy with that then click “Start Setup”, then click “Next”.

You will need to now select the possible times that you will be available for bookings during a typical week.

Once you have set up your availability then you can start to customise some of the settings for this service. Choose to make sure that each booking is sent to you so that you approve it before going ahead with the booking. You can choose to let clients book you in advance. What could be a true time saver is to sync these appointments via your Google Calendar.

Then select Next to proceed. Now comes the time where you show your clients what kind of services you can provide for them. Click “Add a service” and then “Done”.

Be sure to add as much information as possible when listing your services, this helps the clients make their decision before booking with you.
Once you have added your first service it’s now time to list your availability. So select the service you wish to list and click on “Create Appointment”.
You are all set up. If you wish to set up more services in the future, click on “Appointments” then “Appointment settings” under “Services list” you can add more services if you provide anymore.
How to get set up on this service – Instagram

In order for you to get set up on Instagram first, you will need to add a Facebook page to set this up. With Instagram, you will be able to set up this button with a third party such as Acuity Scheduling, Appointy or Booksy. Below is a full list of the third-party options.

Acuity Scheduling
Appointy
Appointments by Square
Avec
BeautyDate
Bookatable
Booksy
Chope
Eventbrite
Fresha
Genbook
GetSquire
Gettimely
GlassGenius
Gopanache
Gurunavi
Jasper’s Ristorante
MyTme

Quandoo
Reserve
Restorando
Resy
Salon Iris
Schedulicity
Schedulista
Setmore
SevenRooms

StyleSeat
TheFork
Tock
Treatwell
Vagaro
Yelp

I have to be honest I didn’t know what link to provide when adding Appointments via the Instagram app so I would suggest following the instructions below which are done via the Facebook page for your business.

If you have a Facebook page set up, go to your page settings and choose “Instagram”. Connect an Instagram account to your page if you haven’t already done so.

Then head to the Appointments tab Scroll down to see “Instagram” then you will be able to Add Book Button.

Check your Instagram account to see the button in action.

If you need a little bit more convincing from this post then check out some of the use cases I found on Instagram.

It's been a while on here since I posted anything at all as usual. It's a recurring theme on this blog.

I fancied listing and showing off the TV shows I am currently watching and also excited for.

1. Supergirl

I have been watching two DC comic TV shows over the years The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. Two fantastic comic book based TV shows and I have watched a few crossover episodes with all the DC shows. So I felt it was time to get back into Super Girl, which I discovered a few months ago but drifted away from. A few of my fav shows are on a break and I wanted to watch some more episodes since there are three series to get caught up on.

2. Arrested Development

This one is a very old programme but if you are already fans of the show you will know that it is back for another Series/Season. I found out about the show around a year or so ago through my boyfriend who recommended it to me. I saw that all of the seasons were on Netflix so I did a binge watch I think. An amazing cast of actors who I find work so well together. Season 5 is actually streaming right now, so you can literally binge the show straight away. So glad this show is back I know that a lot of people wanted it back and there were rumours of a movie but I think I can settle for a new season.

3. Friday Night Dinner

This one is a bit niche and probably only makes sense to anyone who lives in the UK. This show has been a favourite of mine for like years now. I didn't watch it when it first aired but heard about it around a year later after it's air date. It's not been on TV for a while now really, but they have been back for another Series/Season this year. I am already in love and also got my boyfriend hooked on it. I love the storyline of the family and it's filmed mostly in the family home of the Jewish family. Two brothers keep coming round every Friday Night for a not so traditional Jewish dinner. The comedy timing is perfect and just has me laughing all the time.

4. Aggretsuko

I am half Japanese if you didn't know already but I haven't always been a big fan of anime TV shows until now. I found Aggretsuko because I saw someone mention it on Instagram and also it's been appearing in the featured section of Netflix. Plus my boyfriend and I were intrigued so we watched the first episode I think I prefer it more than my boyfriend did. Anyways it's so freaking cute but 100% relatable. Aggretsuko works in an accounting firm in Japan and has a lazy arse boss who gives her hell but, little does everyone know they the way she relieves stress is by performing death metal/screamo music. I don't personally love death metal but it's the humour that gets me, it's spoken in Japanese but there are subtitles so it's easy to follow along. I have the advantage of like knowing Japanese so you know it is easier for me.

I watch a few other shows and these are like my latest favs. Comment or tweet me your latest fav shows.

So here I am on a little ramble about Vlogmas and that.

I am attempting Vlogmas but so far filmed like 2 videos and vlogged a bit of something. I didn't really like the vlog much, so no idea if I want to edit it.

I also have been battling with my anxiety getting somewhat the better of me, and I hate that it affected my mood heavily the past few days. With the construction making me lose sleep and just putting me off filming because it is super annoying having people listen to me film something. Pretty sure any YouTuber wants a quiet house whilst filming.

I want to film videos I really do, I just can't find a moment when a builder or a construction worker is not in my house doing work. I am mostly speaking about the evenings, to be honest. When I do get free time, I just head out of the house to see family and spend quality time with them. So I purposely don't spend time in the house that isn't 100% complete.

This weekend I am out a lot, but I am going to film favourites of 2017 video in the evening some point next week. That is something I can definitely aim for. Then film any travel bits and Christmas related things too.

I will make a new set up to for my videos in the New Year when my room is completed. I want to change up the look in my videos so aiming to try something new out.

My Channel has barely been seen many uploads this year, and that slightly annoys me. This is my fault and partially because I had no idea what to post, to be honest.

After like several years I realised what I like making, and that was mainly haul videos and some tech videos. I know from experience haul videos bring in better views than other videos. This is apparent on many beauty vloggers channels. I want to make some more since I do the occasional shop online and in store. Plus I am always discovering new products for beauty too. I know also the style of editing I want to put in for these videos, I have a haul which I am going to edit this week and so excited to get it edited, reckon it will do quite well.

For me making Tsum Tsum related content makes me so happy, it feels like authentic and not forced which is key for me. So that is going to stick to my channel, you will be seeing a bit of that content. I play this game on a daily basis and lots happen in the app.

As for the covers, if I am honest I haven't bothered to learn new songs in some time now, I really liked recording my last cover. I begin to feel like my covers seem like karaoke rather than unique. I currently have a Scissor Sisters cover recorded but I don't have any video clips filmed for it. I kinda wanted to do something with it but don't feel like making the video for it. I don't really feel the need for a separate channel anymore for my covers. I am just going to stick with the one channel I do have. Overall I don't feel the need to make cover videos, I lost total interest in setting up for one and filming it. I might upload but then I might not, maybe don't sub for the covers if you are new.

This part year I felt lost with my content and didn't know what I really wanted to make. Right now I like my Tsum Tsum content, making Haul videos and overall more fashion related content. I have started spending more time putting outfits together and might make fashion and beauty related content.

I really enjoyed my beauty related content a while ago, it took time but I was proud of the direction of that content. I have a few items that could make it in a video for sure, it could be what brings me better views and overall channel happiness.

I thought I might update the few who read my blog posts and just keep you in the loop.

So if you follow me on Twitter, you will know I share one article a week which I think is share-worthy and called it #GoodReadMonday. I wanted to collect all the links to the articles into this post and let you know how I feel about them as well. This will become a monthly occurrence on my blog, so check back in at the end of the month to find out which ones I shared and why.

New Research Shows Consumers Prefer Help Over Witty Comebacks https://t.co/fBsFKUI4P0 via @socialmedia2day #GoodReadMonday
— Akika Kalde (@akikakalde) June 5, 2017

So this one was a really interesting article about customer service, one which I think will definitely help me be a better social media manager. This article helped me realise that being witty and using slang words or trying to be your users best friend isn't what consumers want. Just be honest and open and kind then you will reap the benefits.

I love reading these Social Media Roundups and I have another one to read today actually so might be sharing that. I find it is the easiest way to catch up on any new changes social media channels have made in the past month.  I recommend these posts by Hootsuite if you don't get the time to catch up weekly on changes.

10 Quick Social Media Ad Writing Tips From an Expert - https://t.co/qh4KNhqxGs via @hootsuite #GoodReadMonday

Even the best of us struggle with copy for ads, so these tips are really helpful and when I do my next ad for our brand I will take these thoughts into consideration. They recommended keeping ad copy short and let the work speak for itself. A good point was as well is that you should be basing your campaign of what you ultimately want to achieve from this advert.

— Akika Kalde (@akikakalde) June 26, 2017
So E3 was not so long ago, some interesting stats about the event were published. I thought it was really interesting to see what a huge impact E3 has on social media. A lot more people apparently were talking about the event in the run-up and after the event.

Well there you have it my very rough roundup of the #GoodReadMonday posts, took me a while to blooming get round to writing this, but I did it. Hope it helped in some way.

So it's been a while but I wanted to check back in with everyone again.

I am enjoying the idea of vlogging my outings either with my boyfriend or my travels to Scotland to see him. We tend to have a lot of fun on our trips away in the UK, I have gone more places in the UK with him than with anyone else and it's a really nice feeling.

I want to aim to vlog more of those outings, as not only is it nice for me to vlog it but to remember those outings as well. So expect a crap tonne more vlogs heading your way very soon.

I also come across some really good royalty free music as well for my vlogs, it's a lot better than the stuff I have come across on YouTube Audio Library.

Got a lot of app related videos planned for my channel to which I have talked about a lot on my last ketchup vlog. So I am excited to spend time with those videos and make them look good.

So thanks for checking back in and hopefully write again very soon.
